Why Has the Third Party system fallen behind in the presidential election?

Published by tkeeley at 2:33 pm under politics Edit This

Let’s be honest, first and foremost: the last time anyone has mentioned they voted third party someone in that room or in that debate threw out the phrase “then you are wasting your vote.”

Why is this? Why have you wasted your time, energy, and conviction at the voter’s booth? Is it because the mass of media has brainwashed us into believing there are literally just two candidates, with the possibility of just one more if you truly hate the first two items on the menu?

Think about it for a minute: you–an American citizen with rights, freedoms, and pursuit of happiness–have been told that you now no longer have that freedom. You have been told that

1) what you believe is wrong

2) you are not thinking

3) you are unpatriotic

Since when has a two party system actually benefited us? For over 200 years now America has had what is considered two major parties with others running behind. I’d argue that at the beginning this was certainly less distinct as it is today, but the modern view of our presidential elections is still skewed in the favour of those who are “more able to win.”

When was this decided, in the courts of the corrupt and incompetent congress? I was not a member of the voting party to essentially outlaw extra competition.

On a final side note, the whole “lesser of two evils” argument is a moot point. Lesser of two evils still remains on the board of evil. If McCain, to you republican neo-con hardnosers, is the lesser of two evils…you will end up in the same position you are now when you did the same exact thing with President Bush.

Vote on your convictions–vote third party.

I wholeheartedly agree. George Washington even said the party system would lead to a major division in the country. And I don’t understand these bitter Hillary supporters who are threatening to vote McCain or not vote at all. Put your vote to good use and show America that names like Nader and Barr are just as relevant as Obama and McBush!

Way to go on getting your blog up and running so quickly and the content is wonderful and inspiring to say the least. I would like to thank you for bringing this subject up and I totally agree with your saying how it is never a waste of time to vote how you feel is right in your heart. It has come to pass that many voters believe and feel they have no other choices but I am glad you set the record straight.

Thanks Bill. I for one am voting Barr this round. I am hoping deep down that America wakes up and thinks before it’s too late!

Brandbla8, thanks for the encouragement. I’m not new to the blogging craze but this is the first post on this site for me. I utilize a few other places to write on too, hopefully I’ll be balancing the writing between them all equally :)
